ABOUT ABOUT

We are gathering on Sun. Oct. 29th & Sun. Nov. 5th between 1 - 2pm to trim and clean the Byberry Township African American Burial Ground. **RAINDATES: Mon. Oct. 30th & Mon. Nov. 6th**

This hallowed ground dates back to 1780, yet the site is currently littered and overgrown. To prepare for a forthcoming memorial ceremony, we are looking for volunteers to clean up trash and trim the brush. We ask the following requirements of our volunteers:

  • Must be 18 years or older to sign up. Volunteers under 18 can attend with an adult guardian, but will be assigned duties that meet their age range. Please let us know if you will be bringing a minor to the program.
  • (BYOT) Bring Your Own Tools! We cannot guarantee tools will be available for those who do not bring their own.
  • Dress sturdy - coverup to do this work. No arms, knees or toes out!

HOW TO ACCESS THE SITE AND PARK

The burial ground can only be accessed through Benjamin Rush State Park. There is no formal signage to direct visit visitors to the site, but the project coordinator, Hannah Wallace will decribe how to find the site to all registrants. Join us!
